“Relationship” is not a four-letter word.

Connor Dawson’s wolf wanted out—bad. But the hairy dude would just have to wait a bit. Lately his animal side had been getting more and more riled up, and nothing seemed to appease him. But then Connor wouldn’t exactly say he had been feeling very appeased lately, either.

It didn’t help that the sun would soon be setting and tonight was a full moon. Unlike the stereotype, werewolves didn’t turn into uncontrollable beasts under the full moon. But the moon did call to his inner Fido rather loudly. And since Connor had a case, Fido needed to chill.

Connor was part of an unofficial law enforcement team tasked with ensuring paranormals didn’t kill each other or, at the very least, didn’t clue humans in to the fact they exist. And while humans thought vamps and werewolves were cool in the Hollywood sense, in reality there were a lot more to keep quiet about—elves, faeries, nymphs, witches, gargantuans, vampires, gargoyles, shifters, scores of demons—the list went on.

Right now, he stood outside a typical house in the San Diego burbs. On the inside, however, typical was not on the agenda. A philandering husband and a pissed-off witch wife made for a volatile combination.

The wife had been turned over to her coven for punishment and the husband to a healer for…well, healing. Now they were left with the cleanup.

Connor opened the door to the team van as his teammate Giz walked out of the house with a box. Smoke wafted lightly from the top. Which made Connor a little twitchy. But Giz insisted he had muted the spell used on the toaster. Since Giz was a techno-guru and a powerful warlock, Connor would take his word for it.

Sparks shot up from the top. On second thought…

“Are you sure you shut down the nastiness?”

“Yes. It won’t hurt you. The spell was designed specifically to attack the husband. You definitely don’t want to cheat on a witch.”

“Female shifters aren’t too keen on adultery either,” Connor said. And he couldn’t blame them. He might like to play the field a bit, but he didn’t get involved with married women. Even he had a conscience.

Giz stashed the box in the van.

Connor shut the door. “This is why I won’t be getting married.”

Giz chuckled.

“What?”

“You won’t be getting married because no woman would have you.”

Connor bristled. “What the hell does that mean?”

“Except for a few supernatural species, most marriages are based on monogamy. Do you need me to define it for you?”

He knew the definition of monogamy. He just never got into a situation where he had to practice it. Relationships were not his modus operandi.

“Very funny. Don’t tell me you’ve been drinking the happily-ever-after Kool-Aid.”

Giz grinned. “It’s hard not to thanks to all our teammates catching the lovebug.”

Lovebug, hell. It was more like love fungus or bacteria, or black mold. Connor and Giz were the only two of their five-man team who hadn’t succumbed. Which was more than fine with him.

Love made his brother and his friends more than a little stupid. And, Connor reluctantly had to admit, a lot happy. But he couldn’t imagine how he would ever find that kind of happiness—not that he was looking. He hoped for their sakes their happiness would last, but he’d never seen love work out over the long haul.

Of course he and Giz were handling this case while his teammates were spending time with their significant others. And after Connor and Giz wrote up their notes to send to the supernatural Tribunal and disposed of the magically toxic toaster, they would go back to the house, where they lived like a couple of overgrown frat boys, and stare at each other over pizza and beer. Which didn’t sound very appealing.

At all.

Nope, on second thought, he needed to go out and find a little no-strings companionship.

Variety—one. Monogamy—zero.

But then he wasn’t one to keep score.

….So. What do you think? I think Connor is going to be a tough nut to crack in the relationship department, don’t you?

Decisions, Decisions…

Recently I posted a blog called Writer’s Crossroads about deciding on what to write next. A month later I am still struggling with that decision. I’m not sure what my hold up is exactly.

I have actually written the first couple pages of the sixth book in my paranormal wedding planner series which means that I am heading in that direction, right?

Maybe. Because then I wrote the first couple of pages of the potential first book in my Mind Sweeper shifter spin-off trilogy.

And as amazing as I try to be at balancing my day job with writing and publishing, I can’t write two books at once. So I really, really, really need to make a decision and settle back into my writing process once again.

Do I roll the dice? Ask my magic eight ball? Shuffle the deck?

Any suggestions on decision-making would be greatly appreciated!

Just One More Chapter

I thought I would share my new T shirt with you. What do you think? Obviously, any avid reader would give a thumbs up to the idea of “Just One More Chapter” and I found it especially cute since it had a cat with glasses on it. How can you go wrong with a bespectacled kitty cat?

But what makes this saying even more appropriate for me is that I am in the midst of editing the next book in my paranormal wedding planner series. And so I forge ahead with each chapter to work through the notes/edits my wonderful editor sent me.

Edits can range from simple grammatical issues to having to rework a scene. I am plowing through all the changes I need to make. And of course there is also the clean up that can drive a writer to distraction. For example…how many times can you have your characters smile? or frown? nod? or shake their head? Apparently a LOT. Which means going through the manuscript and finding different ways to express things (like the dreaded dialogue tags).

But I move forward so I can share the story. I am not the only one who wants me to complete JUST ONE MORE CHAPTER before I call it a night…

Now to the WHAT of our Journey…

And away we go again on this journey of new covers for my Mind Sweeper series. Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about the WHY, WHO, and WHEN of recovering my series. Today I’m going to talk about the WHAT.

Sweeper Ebook Final (1)What is it that I am trying to say with my covers? With the new covers, I wanted to convey more of the Urban Fantasy vibe. To give readers a hint of the paranormal or other that my Mind Sweeper world lives in.

And this is when the fun and creativity comes into play.

My cover artist conveyed the sense of other with color. The purples, blues, pinks and turquoise takes us down a path of being a bit different, yet the colors all tie together overall, making the books compliment each other.

Then there’s the smoke or glow around the characters on the covers that give you that paranormal sense.Shifter Final Ebook (1)

Backgrounds also help convey a message. Since this series is Urban Fantasy, the urban (or in this case grunge) backdrop is important. Believe it or not, each background plays a part in that particular book’s story. For example, part of Shifter Wars takes place in a body shop, so it seemed appropriate to showcase Kyle standing in one.

And one of the coolest parts of the Shifter Wars cover is the cat sitting on the car. He plays an important part in the story as well!

Mind Sweeper has several pivotal scenes that take place in empty warehouses which lends itself to that urban feel.

Sentinel Lost’s background of the hallway on one side, and the stairs on the other represents choices. In that book, Kyle has to make a number of choices when it comes to love, her family, her own safety, and finally her life.

Sentinel Ebook Final (1)Even the font type conveys a “feeling” of other for the stories.

And we can’t forget about the pics on the t-shirts. For Mind Sweeper, the little girl with the magic wand is a perfect example of Kyle. Trying to find her way in the world when she doesn’t exactly “fit in” with everyone else.

The wolf on her Shifter Wars t shirt is pretty self-explanatory, (I hope) and finally the key on her t shirt on Sentinel Lost is the crux behind Kyle’s entire story arc.

Am I making your head hurt yet? Needless to say, my cover artist rocked these covers! And I wanted to share with you the WHAT behind the covers to give you an idea of what they represent for the series. And also to let you know about the thought behind them.

Let me know what you think…

Blurb:

Why did the demon cross the road? Apparently to escape from Kyle McKinley. Which is more than fine with her.

The last thing she wants is to be dragged into another supernatural crisis, but the Fates have something more interesting in store for her. Since the tricky wenches love to mess with people, Kyle isn’t really surprised. And once she learns Trina, the young shifter girl whose memory she erased, is being stalked again, Kyle will do whatever it takes to protect her.

Normally a secretive group, the shifters reluctantly agree to allow Kyle and her vampire and demon teammates to investigate. Are the poachers who kidnapped Trina back for revenge? But when other shifters are also targeted, Kyle becomes convinced there is more to the attacks than vengeance. And when the violence escalates and Griffin, the enigmatic leader of the shifters, ends up in the crosshairs, the team braces for a bloodbath.

Scrambling to identify the mysterious group bent on destroying the shifters, and why, Kyle is also haunted by dreams and painful flashes from the prophesied Key of Knowledge which has taken up residence in her brain. In typical Kyle fashion, she decides to ignore it, but the more she ignores it, the more it digs its claws into her consciousness. If she can’t learn to embrace the Key and ask for help from those closest to her, she could lose her sanity before she’s able to prevent a shifter civil war.

2013 RWA Golden Heart® Winner, Mind Sweeper

An angel, a demon and a vampire walk into a bar. Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but it’s just another day in the life of Kyle McKinley.

Kyle was born with the ability to erase memories, and the inability to keep her opinions to herself. She and her teammates – a vampire who looks like a sexy pirate with fangs, and a Shamat demon with a penchant for Italian pastries – provide supernatural damage control when humans see too much. Today’s problem? A sword-wielding angel and a demon had a supernatural smackdown during happy hour in a Cleveland bar, leaving behind a headless vampire and a dozen human witnesses.

This latest supernatural slip-up is attracting all kinds of attention. So much attention that the police step in, and Kyle has to deal with Joe Dalton, a know-it-all human with the sexiest turquoise eyes she has ever seen. Kyle has no room in her life for yet another human who will treat her like a freak. However, Dalton definitely makes her naughty parts sit up and take notice, and it’s more than mutual. But before they can act on their attraction, they must join forces to solve a dangerous puzzle. And when they uncover the truth, the apocalyptic ripple effect forces Kyle to make a choice. Learn to trust again, or risk losing everyone she cares about, including Dalton.
