For Better or For Wolf

Wolf“Relationship” is not a four-letter word.

Olivia Jennings is all about following the rules. A psychiatrist with a tragic past, she dedicates her life to helping others. Controlling all aspects of her life—especially relationships—protects her battered heart. But when she learns supernaturals exist, her carefully constructed world crumbles. Drawn into counseling a werewolf pack, she butts heads with the ridiculously handsome but infuriating wolf determined to protect her.

Connor Dawson is all about bucking the status quo. He’s not looking for commitment or love. In fact, after being rejected by his pack, he’s certain he’s immune to that particular emotion. But when Olivia inserts herself into wolf business, his hackles stand straight up. No one is more surprised than Connor when their teasing banter turns into serious attraction.

When Olivia and Connor are thrown into the middle of a pack war, things heat up…with an attempted murder, a political power struggle, and their sizzling chemistry. Will this explosive situation finally bring them together—or blow them apart?

So what do you think???

I really loved writing Connor and Olivia’s story and can’t wait to share it with you!!

Less Words do NOT Mean Less Work

Did I get your attention with the title, my friends? You would think that the less words a writer has to write, the easier things would be, right?

I’m here to disagree. Sometimes the EASIEST thing to write is the novel itself. Thousands upon thousands of words that come out and develop into a story. What becomes difficult is when you are trying to write less to describe more.

What do I mean? There is the book blurb, also known as the back cover copy. A couple of paragraphs to reflect mood, plot, characters, etc. Not an easy task for sure and I have bemoaned blurb writing in past blogs. Today I am going to talk about something even shorter in the word department, but not easier.

What is it? Drum roll please …….

The Title

Yep, imagine writing a book and then sitting down and trying to determine in five words or less what you are going to call it. Many of my book titles are two words. Oh, the pain.

With my new trilogy, I have been having an extremely hard time finding titles that fit. That make me say “That’s it!”

First, I started with using the brothers’ names as titles. Then I decided that didn’t work and went on to two word titles – dozens and dozens of two word titles that I played with and that needed to coordinate since I have to come up with three titles.

Now I have graduated to titles that are phrases, and I’m finally close to finalizing them! A lot of work, for sure. But when I release these stories into the world, the title (or bow) has to top the wrapping (or cover).

How else will I entice people to rip it open, and dive inside?

Meet Alex Bennett—wedding phobic in a family of wedding planners. Not the best combination, but being left at the altar can wreak havoc on one’s self-esteem. When Alex’s grandmother requests her help with a high-profile wedding, Alex sets aside her fears to attend. But when the bride runs away, and her grandmother’s business faces ruin, Alex will do whatever it takes to uncover the truth. Even when the truth leads to sabotaged weddings and a runaway bride who isn’t human. The last thing Alex needs to deal with is the overbearingly handsome man brought in to lead the investigation.

Meet Devin Cole—a paranormal with no powers. Guilty until proven innocent, his powers have been rescinded until his upcoming trial, which he should be preparing for. He doesn’t have time for a runaway bride case. But the bride is a supermodel who also happens to be supernatural, so he and his team must handle damage control. The last thing Devin needs to deal with is a tempting woman who insists on being part of the investigation…and has half the horny supernatural male population chasing after her.

But with humans and supernaturals bent on destroying each other, Alex and Devin must put aside their differences and work together. Can Devin protect Alex and defeat the enemy without his powers? And now that Alex knows supernaturals do exist, can she once again believe in a fairy-tale happily ever after?

Short is Not So Sweet

I am working toward the release of my next book and have reached the stage where I am writing that dreaded/dratted blurb. The blurb is what you read on the back cover or flap of a book or the paragraph you find on the e-retailer sites.

word-sweet-1037108_640It’s a couple of paragraphs that are supposed to convey what the book is about, including the characters, plot, tone, etc, etc. That is a very tall order for a very short paragraph. And the saying “short and sweet” does NOT apply to the first or sometimes the fiftieth draft of a blurb. It can be a painful, painful process. Each word is important. If not? Cut it to make room for others.

As you can tell by the tone of this blog, blurb writing is not one of my favorite pastimes. And yet it is one of the most important aspects of marketing books (next to the cover, that is).  How many of us have clicked on the buy link after reading a blurb? Right. And that adds pressure to the writing of the dreaded/dratted blurb.

But I persevere because I want to let potential readers know about my stories in as quick of a soundbite as I can. I just need to draw them into the story and then I’ve got them where I want them (cue mustache twirling and maniacal laughter).

Blurb draft #18 here I come!

It’s All About the Presentation

20151221_185126Now that the holidays are here, I have been spending a LOT of time wrapping gifts. Whether I use pretty bags, sparkly bows, or shiny wrapping paper, the gifts I give look very cool on the outside! And in some ways that is an important trait for writers to keep in mind as well when it comes to their work. Of course the most important part of what a writer does is the story itself (what’s inside of the wrapping).

However…

If you can’t entice a reader to come pick up that package and shake it a bit, then they won’t open (buy) it. So your book’s cover is vital. It is the pretty paper that attracts a first glance. And the shiny bow? Well that’s your blurb – the paragraph that teases your reader to give your book a chance. A couple of sentences that hints to plot, sets mood, and gives a glimpse of character. And yes, it is very hard sometimes to get that darn blurb right.

As I head toward 2016, I have to think about the covers and the blurbs for my new group of characters and the stories they want told. There will be new adventures wrapped in pretty paper and bows. I’m looking forward to my new series and I hope you’ll be willing to pick up the ‘present’ and give it a shake!

Picture Time!

No excuses this time, my followers. I am two days late for my weekly blog, but there is a definite reason for it. On Saturday, I posted my cover reveal for The Pursuit, which is book 4 in my Mind Sweeper Series. And since I think that it is an AMAZING cover, I decided to leave it front and center on my blog page for a few days before I posted my weekly blog.

If you didn’t get a chance to see my cover reveal, click HERE to check it out. And if you are wanting to read an excerpt from The Pursuit, click HERE.

Now when it came to this cover, I will admit that I was a little nervous. After all I have described Jean Luc in my books as beautiful and sexy. And I am sure that my readers have definite ideas of what he looks like in their heads. But I decided to take the risk and put a picture of him on this cover. I mean, Talia got face time on book two, it only seems fair that Jean Luc got some attention of his own!

It really is amazing what a picture can do. It can set mood, set expectation, set pulses racing. So in celebration of my release on February 8th, I am having fun with pictures!

I have created a Pinterest board for The Pursuit where I will be posting relevant pics for your perusal. Come visit it by clicking HERE.

And of course…wait for it….I will be having countdown teasers next week too! Yahoo, I just love teasers. Fun or angsty quotes paired with pictures that make you wonder what the book is really about!

So stay tuned….

The Pursuit

Book Four in the Mind Sweeper Series.

A Mind Sweeper novella that delves further into Jean Luc and Talia’s story. Thirty years ago, Jean Luc Delacroix believed he had found his mate in Talia Walker—until she walked out on him. While he has honored her wish to be independent, he cannot forget her. And when they’re thrown together again, Jean Luc’s feelings reignite. This time he will do whatever is necessary to make her his.

Talia learned everything she knows about love—and about being a vampire—from Jean Luc. But the memories of her forced turning and loss of humanity compelled her to strike out on her own to prove she could take care of herself. When she comes face to face with Jean Luc again, she wonders if her continued independence is as important as being with the vampire she still loves.

Before either can acknowledge their feelings, they are embroiled in a deadly case. A killer vampire is draining humans. When suspects are uncovered, the very foundation of the vampire nation is threatened. And when they get closer to the truth, and Jean Luc’s life is in danger, Talia risks her own life to hunt down the killer.

Will Jean Luc and Talia finally find the courage to follow their hearts? Or will the killer destroy them first?

So what do you think? Do we have a winner here, or what?

2013 RWA Golden Heart® Winner, Mind Sweeper

An angel, a demon and a vampire walk into a bar. Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but it’s just another day in the life of Kyle McKinley.

Kyle was born with the ability to erase memories, and the inability to keep her opinions to herself. She and her teammates – a vampire who looks like a sexy pirate with fangs, and a Shamat demon with a penchant for Italian pastries – provide supernatural damage control when humans see too much. Today’s problem? A sword-wielding angel and a demon had a supernatural smackdown during happy hour in a Cleveland bar, leaving behind a headless vampire and a dozen human witnesses.

This latest supernatural slip-up is attracting all kinds of attention. So much attention that the police step in, and Kyle has to deal with Joe Dalton, a know-it-all human with the sexiest turquoise eyes she has ever seen. Kyle has no room in her life for yet another human who will treat her like a freak. However, Dalton definitely makes her naughty parts sit up and take notice, and it’s more than mutual. But before they can act on their attraction, they must join forces to solve a dangerous puzzle. And when they uncover the truth, the apocalyptic ripple effect forces Kyle to make a choice. Learn to trust again, or risk losing everyone she cares about, including Dalton.

So what do you think?????

Blurb Vote, Take 2 (when a picture is just a picture)

Last week I posted my blurb for Mind Sweeper and waited for comments, likes, what have you. And guess what?

Nothing happened.

As the days passed, my emotions rollercoastered (not sure that is a real word, but it works here). At first I sat in front of my computer holding my breath for my followers’ reactions. And then I got a like for my blog. Eureka! The comments were going to pour in, I just knew it. Then silence reigned again, except for the figurative crickets chirping in the distance.

Now self-doubt crept in (it is never far away, you know) and started taunting me. Maybe your blurb is so bad that people don’t want to tell me the truth??? Forget that it was a holiday week and people were busy and out of town…forget that I posted this on a Sunday morning when many people are out to church and brunch and enjoying the warm (finally) weather…I automatically jumped to the worst conclusion.

And instead of continuing to talk to myself (cause I have a tendency to do that when self-doubt is around) I decided to actually ask some people what they thought.

So off I went on my mission. Did you see my blurb? What did you think?

Several of them (you) said. Yes I saw you blurb. I tried to vote, but it wouldn’t let me.

And here was my MISTAKE. You all (rightly so) thought you could click on the yes/no boxes like a poll and it would total the results. But here’s the thing. The picture of the voting ticket on last week’s blog was just that – a picture. It did not allow you to vote. And I take the blame for that. Here I was, trying to be cutesy and have a voting ticket picture and I assumed you all could read my mind and knew you had to respond by comment (blog) or like (Facebook).

Reminder to self: kick Cutesy to the curb.

So mea culpa, my followers. I am sorry I confused you and had you clicking repeatedly on a picture that did nothing but frustrate you. I feel bad for that which is why I am ‘confessing my error’.

So I will try this one more time. Below I have posted my blurb again and have also created an ACTUAL poll that you can vote this time. Give it another whirl and let me know what you think. And don’t worry, if for some reason the poll doesn’t work right, I won’t write a Blurb Vote, Take 3 blog. I’ll just make the results up (I am an author who lives most of the time in a fictional world after all).

Here is the blurb reveal…and then vote below (no really, I am not punking you. It is a poll this time)

An angel, a demon and a vampire walk into a bar. Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but it’s just another day in the life of Kyle McKinley.

Kyle was born with the ability to erase memories, and along with her teammates – a vampire who resembles a sexy pirate with fangs, and a Shamat demon with a penchant for Italian pastries – they clean up the supernatural messes left behind. And today’s mess is a whopper. A sword-wielding angel and a demon have a supernatural smackdown during happy hour in a Cleveland bar, resulting in a headless vampire and a dozen human witnesses.

And this latest supernatural slip-up is drawing all kinds of attention. So much so, that when the police step in, Kyle has to deal with Joe Dalton, a know-it-all human with the sexiest turquoise eyes she has ever seen. He definitely makes her naughty parts sit up and take notice, and it’s more than mutual. But first they must join forces to solve a dangerous puzzle. And when they uncover the truth, the apocalyptic ripple effect could destroy everyone that Kyle has vowed to protect, including Dalton.

Blurb Reveal for Mind Sweeper!

Okay, my followers, it is finally time to reveal my blurb. You have been waiting patiently for a week and I appreciate that more than you realize. As a stated in last week’s blog, writing blurbs can be the equivalent of slow torture. I have had a lot of help with this blurb, so a quick thanks to my writer friend (you know who you are) and my beta readers and M.E. who volunteered to read my blurb after already spending  a lot of time editing my story in the first place!

voteHopefully, I have captured the essence of my story…but the proof is in the voting. Please read my blurb below for MIND SWEEPER and let me know what you think. And don’t be shy! This will be on the back cover of my book and the description you will find if you have an ereader.

So without further delay….here is my blurb for MIND SWEEPER:

An angel, a demon and a vampire walk into a bar. Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but it’s just another day in the life of Kyle McKinley.

Kyle was born with the ability to erase memories, and along with her teammates – a vampire who resembles a sexy pirate with fangs, and a Shamat demon with a penchant for Italian pastries – they clean up the supernatural messes left behind.  And this latest supernatural slip-up is drawing all kinds of attention. So much so, that when the police step in, Kyle has to deal with Joe Dalton, a know-it-all human with the sexiest turquoise eyes she has ever seen.
