In my last blog I wrote about the struggle I was having on deciding what direction to go in for my current work in progress. I weighed the pros and cons (I told you I would) and decided that I did not want to lose my first 100 pages of the novel. The secondary characters will play as primaries in the next installment of this series.
Once that decision was made, I went through an angst ridden few days determining what I needed to remove from the book to stop ‘muddying up the waters’ so to speak. Taking out scenes for writers can be the equivalent of losing a body part. I refer to it as ‘Oh the Horror’. After all, you have put your blood, sweat, and tears (and mental health) into these pages only to have to cut them out.
If I continue with the body part analogy (which is somewhat disgusting, but appropriate for October and my fixation with Halloween) it is often necessary to remove a part to save the whole. I remind myself this and I highlight the words, swallow hard and hit the delete key.
